Online Blackjack Basics
The rules, strategy, and payout odds in online blackjack are identical to those that have been used for years in traditional casinos. Players try and get a hand of cards adding up to twenty-one. You can keep asking for cards if your hand totals less than twenty-one. But if the next card puts the total higher, you lose. The goal is to figure out whether you have the best odds of beating the dealer if you stand (stop calling for cards) when your hand adds up to a low number like thirteen and hope that the Dealer goes over. Or, to keep collecting cards until you have an eighteen or nineteen. In that case you hope the dealer either hits seventeen (at which time he has to stand) or goes over.
In Blackjack, Kings, Queens, and Jacks are all worth ten. The best possible hand is a ten or face card with an Ace. Since Aces are worth eleven, the two cards add up to twenty-one and you win. In the unlikely event that the dealer also has a Blackjack, then it is considered a “push” or tie and your bet is returned to you.
After a natural blackjack (being dealt a ten value card and an ace), the next best hand are three cards that add up to twenty-one. For example, let’s say you are dealt a nine and a four, adding up to thirteen. Since this is very low and unlikely to win unless the dealer goes over twenty-one, you would ask for another card. If that card is an eight, your hand now adds up to twenty-one. While a natural blackjack (Ace and face card or ten) would still beat it, it is still a probable winner.
Usually, people stop asking for cards when their hand totals seventeen. In all likelihood, they would get a five or higher on their next card and go bust. On the other hand, if the dealer is showing a higher total (but still under twenty-one) then you might as well ask for another card because the dealer is already beating you. However, your strategy depends on your comfort with risk. Waiting until eighteen or nineteen will result in more times going bust, but it will also enable you to win almost every time you don’t go over – provided that the dealer doesn’t get a Blackjack.
